How Your Hobbies Can Jumpstart Your Job Search

Are you starting your job search but unsure where to begin? Often, when you work in a field that serves many different industries (like marketing, accounting, etc.), there may be a diverse range of companies you could apply to. How do you start narrowing down who you want to work for? Read on for some tips.

What are your values?

Decide what ethics and values you believe in and search for companies that hold similar values to yours! It is important that you respect the things your employer stands for.

Sharing values with your company can be a great motivator for doing good work and furthering their mission. In this way, it is like partnering with your company to accomplish common goals.

What are your hobbies?

Think about what you enjoy doing outside of work. Reading? Sewing? Fishing? Perhaps research some companies that do work related to these hobbies. Working for a company that produces things you are interested in can make your work feel a lot more meaningful.

Even if you aren’t working directly with your hobbies, being a part of helping that business run can bring a new motivation to the work you do. If you are feeling stuck in your job search, finding companies that are related to your hobbies may be a great next move!

What are you passionate about?

Are you passionate about supporting certain causes outside of your work? Try looking for companies that put their efforts toward similar passions! This does not mean that this must be their direct purpose as a company, but there may be some companies that donate toward certain causes or host fundraisers.

Again, this is a great motivator to do good work and help further your company’s mission and vision!
