Why Human Contact is Key in Recruiting

You have probably seen all the new (and not-so-new) AI technology surrounding recruiting. AI can expedite the process and make your recruiters much more effective, but where is it important for recruiters to get very hands-on? Here are some key reasons why recruiting requires a human contact:

Showing Your Investment

Making time for human/live interaction shows a candidate that you are serious about them and that you find it worthwhile to spend time learning more about them. While it can be helpful to run candidates through some AI skill testing or interview prep, make sure your first touchpoint with them is from a real person.

Give them a call, tell them you are interested in learning more about them. If you are going to use some AI tools to learn more about them, be up front about this. Make sure they know that you see their time as valuable, and you want to make a real human connection with them.

Providing a Comfortable Environment for Interviews

We’ve seen AI software that interviews candidates for you, but is this really the most effective? While AI can be a helpful tool, nothing can replace human contact and connection in the interview process. A real person brings warmth, a sense of humor, and personality to the interview space—things that cannot be replaced by AI.

As their potential future employer, you want to create a space that makes the interviewee feel comfortable to relax and be themselves while interviewing. Using AI, or even just video prompts that they record of themselves, makes things stiff and unnatural because they know they aren’t really talking directly to anyone.

Communicating Company Culture

Unless your company is run by robots or blinking computer monitors, a lack of human contact won’t give candidates a good feel for your company culture. Make sure to have deliberate points of contact with candidates—an introduction, a live interview, and if you like them, a follow up to the interview.

Remember: if they are a valuable candidate, you need to sell your company to them just as much as they need to sell themselves to you! Give them a clear idea of what it looks like to work at your company. If possible, show them around and introduce them to a few employees.

People want human connections! If they feel like they are being pushed through a series of impersonal AI interviews/screenings before they speak to a real person, they will lose interest quickly. Be the company that shows warmth and connection right off the bat.
