Showing Confidence in Job Interviews

Naturally, most people are nervous for important job interviews—that is okay! It is not okay when those nerves get in the way of a successful interview. Here are a few tips to show your confidence while interviewing.

Body Language

The most important thing to do first is relax! If you are stiff and constantly adjusting yourself, not only is this distracting to your interviewer, but it can also make you seem unsure of yourself. Sit up straight and make sure you maintain an appropriate amount of eye contact. Some people are not comfortable with eye contact—that is okay! Just make sure you make an effort to meet their eyes (even only for a second) every once in a while.

Don’t forget to show friendliness! Smile and be sure to face them. If you are turned away from them and closed in on yourself, this can make you seem inaccessible.

Speech

The most important thing in interviews is to pause and think! Do not rush your answers or conversation. If you need more time, repeat the question back to yourself. Speak slowly and avoid verbal pauses (ex., uh, um, like). Instead of using these filler words, just pause. Not as much time is passing as it seems.

The actual words that you speak should also show confidence. Qualifying things with phrases like “This is just my perspective but. . .,” can make you seem unsure of yourself. Instead, use phrases like “I believe that. . .,” or “From my experience,” to start sentences stating your opinion or experiences. Don’t belittle yourself!

Focus

Lastly, be sure to focus on what is right in front of you—your interview! It can be easy to start thinking too far ahead or focusing on hypotheticals. Try to keep your mind on the questions at hand and the company right in front of you!

Study up on the company. This equips you to ask good questions and have a better understanding of the questions you are being asked in the interview. Feel free to bring notes with you! Write down questions you have so that you can get the answers you need by the end of the interview.

Bonus tip: Avoid scrolling on your phone while waiting for your interview. Use this time to think and bring your focus to the task at hand—acing this interview!
