Should You Include Your Address on Your Resume?

Should You Include Your Address on Your Resume?

There are plenty of rules surrounding resumes—some that are tried and true, others quickly going out of fashion. While there are many things to focus on regarding resumes, today we are focusing on this one question: Should you include your address on your resume? Well, the short answer is no. If you want to know why, keep reading!

Maintain your privacy and safety.

The companies you apply to do not need to know everything about you before they even interview you. When you don’t know who will be reading your resume, let alone if they will be hiring you, it is better to err on the safe side and wait to provide this information until you are hired.

Avoid assumptions and discrimination based on your address.

Though unfair, it still happens—some recruiters could make assumptions about you or how a job would work out for you based on where you live. This could be because they think you live too far from the job site or because they have a particular perception of the area where you live. If you plan to relocate far away for a job, including your current address could cause innocent confusion on the recruiter’s part.

Avoid this ridiculousness altogether by leaving your address off your resume. For all we know, you could be moving tomorrow.

Your address is not relevant information!

This could come to you either as a shock or an obvious statement, but your address is irrelevant to your resume! Do not waste precious resume space on information that your potential future employer does not need to know. Unless you are applying to be HOA president, there is no reason for your address to be on your resume.
