We all know that the job description always highlights what the employer is looking for in a candidate—x number of years on the job, y certification, etc., but what about qualities that go unsaid? We outline a few qualities that are green flags for any employer below:
Confidence
Confidence in yourself, your experience, and your abilities goes a long way. Be careful not to confuse this with false confidence—that is definitely a red flag for an employer! Know what you can and cannot do—do not be afraid to show them what you are capable of. Speak with confidence in your interview, and don’t be afraid to follow up!
Communication
No matter the job, employers will always value communication. A good communicator is helpful when brainstorming, problem-solving, or just day-to-day productivity. Clear communication leads to fewer mistakes and more opportunities to learn and grow.
Dependability
Employers want an employee they can count on. Show up on time. Follow through on your commitments. Follow up. Be someone that your employer knows what to expect from. Consistency is key. Highlighting your consistency and dependability in past positions in your interviews is key!
Readiness to learn
The quality of teachability is one that employers highly value. This signals that someone has great potential to gain even more skills and even move to a higher role in the company. Someone who is ready to learn exercises humility and isn’t afraid to ask questions. This person is the best kind of worker because they are a lifelong learner and always looking to improve.
Problem-solving
Employers LOVE an employee who sees a problem and can hop in to come up with plausible solutions. This does not mean that you have to have all of the answers but that you are ready and willing to look into creative solutions. Employees like this are able to look at the big picture and brainstorm what the logical next steps would be.
Whether you are staying in your current role for a while or deep in the job search, it never hurts to work on these qualities within yourself! Not only are these great qualities for an employee to have but they are appreciated in someone as a plain old person too!
