How to Fill Your Critical Roles by the End of the Year

Can you believe it’s already December? 2019 flew by quickly – especially if you’re a hiring manager in this competitive job market. It can be challenging to find the talent you need during this time of year with all of the holidays and time off. However, that doesn’t mean your team should push your hiring efforts to January. Here are three tips to fill your critical roles by the end of the year.

Move quickly

With only a few weeks left in 2019, you cannot have a slow hiring process. With an unemployment rate of 3.6 percent, job seekers have lots of options to choose from. If a resume comes across your desk that looks like a good fit, act with haste! If they seem qualified, give them a call, and schedule an interview. Try to schedule it before the holidays, so you have the opportunity to get that offer letter out before everyone is out of office. If your hiring process isn’t efficient, you will miss out on the best candidates on the market to your competition.

Offer competitive compensation

In this tight market, you have to come in with a firm offer. Many job seekers are entertaining multiple job offers, and thus, will likely accept the most competitive offer. Now is not the time to low ball your candidates. If you like what you see, present an offer that is worthy of their talent and experience.

Moreover, have you thought about the cost of a vacant position (or even multiple) on your team? You might be surprised the amount vacancies can cost your bottom line. In fact, it may also be cheaper in the long run to pay a talented candidate a competitive wage than absorb the lost in production and manpower.

You’ve been an Operations Administrator with JSG for just over a year. Tell us more about your career here!

I do all of the onboarding paperwork for current contractors – including payroll, changes, answering questions, and handling the day-to-day tasks that come along with the industry. I also source for our recruiters in my free time and help prepare paperwork for submittals.

What do you like most about working for Johnson Service Group?

I love my coworkers; we have a great team here in Charleston! I also love being able to help people get into new positions and take the next step in their career.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

As an Operations Administrator, you wear many hats – so you have to be flexible. One minute you might be doing onboarding, and the next, you might be transitioning someone into their future role.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I am very family-oriented, so I spend a lot of time with my kids. With everything from sporting events to school functions, they keep me busy!

You have been an Account Coordinator with JSG for almost a year. Tell us what made you interested in getting into the recruiting world?

I actually went to school for HR. Once I finished my degree, I was looking for something in HR. After meeting with Ed and John, I really liked the message they put across about the company and where the office was going, so I absolutely knew I wanted to work for them in this field!

Why Johnson Service Group?

My favorite thing about Johnson Service Group is definitely the office environment. The tone that Ed & John set for the office makes Johnson Service Group a great place to work. Once you develop a good relationship with the people you work for, it makes you want to go above and beyond in your role and believe in the company and what they stand for.

Can you tell us more about the Account Coordinator role?

Recruiting is only one aspect of HR. As an Account Coordinator, you work with a lot more HR factors such as helping with benefits, onboarding, employee relations, payroll, etc.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I am a huge football fan! I actually bartend in my free time, as I really enjoy the social aspect and building relationships. Also, I have an awesome group of friends that likes to travel a couple of times a year.

What are these SIA Lists?

Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) is the global advisor on staffing and workforce solutions. This year’s report for the Largest Staffing Firms in the United States features 157 companies, an increase from last year’s list of 143 firms. To be considered, each firm must generate at least $100 in revenue. According to Barry Asin, the President of SIA, “The 157 companies in this year’s report generated a combined revenue of $90.2 billion and had an estimated 61% of the market.”

For both the Largest Engineering and Largest Candian Staffing Firms lists, each firm must have made at least $50 million in revenue last year. This year, JSG is proud to announce that we grew on both lists; we rank #14 of 25 largest Canadian firms and #13 of 24 largest engineering firms.

Tell us a little about yourself?

My wife and I have two children, both of whom are boys ages 13 and 16. I am very simple in life and easy going. I have been in the safety field for more than 15 years, and I learned by being in the trenches and working alongside those I intended to help.

What made you want to go into a career in Safety & Risk Management?

I love having the opportunity to help others in times of need. The stratification of trying to prevent work-related injuries makes me feel like I am making a difference and ensuring everyone gets back to their loved ones, the way they walked into work.

What attracted you to Johnson Service Group?

The opportunity to be an integral part of a safety team. With my previous employers, I was a one-man-band. Also, I enjoy the challenges and obstacles that arise with a company that has thousands of contractors in the field.

What will your main responsibilities be as a member of our Safety Team?

My main responsibilities include managing claims and incidents, as well as keeping all departments informed of any changes with their affected employees.

What do you like to do for fun outside of work?

My family and I enjoy hiking and fishing. I also like to fix anything and everything that is broken. I tend to refer myself as a “jack of all trades, master of none.” When I have free time and the weather is warm, I like to do woodwork. For example, I make plaques with inspirational messages and build furniture.

JSG Employee Spotlight: Ric Flores

Meet Ric Flores, an Engineering Recruiter in our Calabasas, California office. Ric has been on staff with JSG for three years and has been working with us for even longer! He is great at establishing relationships with candidates and finding the talent our clients need. Keep reading for more information about Ric and his career with JSG!

You have been a Recruiter with JSG for over three years. What does that entail?

My role in the office is to find candidates. I work towards getting an accurate job description and a thorough understanding of the company from our sales staff. From that point, we use the tools we’re equipped with to find qualified candidates. I like to review the job description and have conversations with sales to really understand what the client is looking for.

I want to ensure the candidate is as prepared as possible. Once we’re partnering with a candidate, it’s important for me to establish a personal connection with them as well. Many of our candidates are interviewing with multiple companies, so it’s essential to make them comfortable with me and let them know that I’m on their side. They know that they can be completely open and honest with me! I will put my own professional spin on everything, and they can talk straight with me. So part of what I do is play “agent” as well on behalf of the candidate to land the position they want.

Tell us a little bit more about your background in staffing.

Earlier in my career, I was in manufacturing as a Floor Supervisor. The company had a lot of staff conflicts and really needed a soundboard for their employees. Eventually, the Vice President asked if I would want to get more involved in a staffing role. I established relationships with the different recruiting firms we worked with, and JSG stood out. They were the most professional, provided the best detail, the best match of what we were looking for, etc. I really loved working with Cathy Kennedy. After relocating, I reached out to Cathy; JSG was hiring for a recruiter, and the rest is history!

What do you like most about working in the staffing industry?

As a recruiter, connecting with people one-on-one is one of my strong points. I want to gauge exactly what they are looking for right off the bat, and then continue to keep that conversation going and grow that relationship.

One of the things I like most about working in the staffing industry is the ability to talk to people about their jobs. Getting to understand everything from Data Collection programs to Manufacturing qualifications allows me to grow connections across all different industries and experience levels. This job really embodies the saying “jack of all trades, master of none.” I learn something new every day!

What do you think makes Johnson Service Group unique?

Freedom and trust are what make JSG unique. We have a great team and work structure with a lot of wiggle room in between. We’re able to work on different positions, utilize different strategies, and put ourselves out there to try new things. The open communication between the leadership and staff is really empowering, from our local team all the way to the corporate office. The fact that we have the freedom and trust to do things “our way” is very nice.

What do you like to do in your free time?

We have 5.5-year-old twins and a three-year-old, so we stay pretty busy! My weekends are ballet lessons and art museums. Even with three girls, we do everything together – stuff they like to do, stuff I want to do, etc. Their joy is something that I am naturally into. I’m also really into sports; I enjoy shooting hoops at the park or going to the local boxing gym when I get the chance.

Reflecting on JSG’s Past, Present, & Future with Ken Slater

As we edge closer to the new year, we thought it was important to take a moment to reflect on JSG’s milestones over the last 35 years. Our company has experienced remarkable growth and exciting changes that we want to highlight. Looking to 2020 and beyond, JSG’s growth and improvement is not looking to slow down by any means. With plans to improve efficiency, development, and growth, JSG’s future appears bright. We had the opportunity to sit down with Ken Slater, Johnson Service Group’s Executive Vice President, to hear his thoughts on the exceptional year we’ve had as a company, as well as what’s in store for JSG in 2020.

Looking back on 2019, what were the major themes for JSG?

2019 has been a relatively big year at JSG for achieving goals. During the month of September, JSG hit a significant milestone in our business, celebrating our 35th anniversary since our incorporation. Additionally, we were named to three prestigious Staffing Industry Analyst lists for the fifth year in a row. These achievements do not come without all our employees’ focused effort and continued thoughtful reinvestment into the company.

Over the past year, we have put an emphasis on growing and improving the agility of our back office. Along with the expansion of our IT Team, we have implemented enhanced cyberinfrastructure and several new tools and software programs. One of which is an upgraded Accounting and Finance platform that will help to streamline our billing and payroll processes. On the sales and recruiting side, we have added and expanded our usage of multiple tools to help identify and communicate with candidates, employees, and prospects.

Lastly, this year, we facilitated the retirement and exit of one of our founders. This step has helped to start restructuring our company’s leadership. We are now able to establish and enable a clear path for communication and decision making both now and in the future. This has led us to establish a company-wide initiative of “One Voice,” with the whole company coming together behind a common mission to help our clients reach their goals by hiring talented people.

What is JSG’s outlook and strategy going into 2020?

In 2020, our plan is to continue with the strategies and foundation we have been building since our inception. Our main goal is to be able to continue efficiently aligning our strengths with our clients’ needs. Our staff will continue to provide exceptional service with a strong sense of urgency, attention to detail, and follow-through.

With the establishment of “One Voice,” our focus is to continue to prepare JSG for generational longevity and thoughtful growth.  We plan to continue building and developing our team to be able to continue offering valued specialized staffing services for another 35 years and beyond.

Remember: Ice and Snow Means “Take it Slow!”

As winter creeps closer, it’s important to reflect on the danger that comes with the colder, slicker weather. The cold winter weather introduces new dangers to the workplace, and thus, it’s crucial for us all to pay closer attention to these new safety risks. Here are eight vital things to keep in mind as you head to work each day this winter:

Eight winter safety facts to keep in mind

  1. According to data from the National Safety Council, 25,000 slip, trip, and fall accidents occur daily in the US.
  2. Snow, ice and freezing temps in the winter multiply the number of wet and slippery surfaces at work and the potential for accidents – ladders, scaffolding, machinery, utility poles, and even the entry and exits to a building can all be exponentially more dangerous in the winter months!
  3. As one might expect, most snow and ice-related slips and falls occur on outdoor surfaces. The majority happen in parking lots, roadways, driveways and walkways where individuals travel on foot between their worksites and vehicles. However, about 8% do occur indoors; in entryways, hallways and other rooms where ice and snow have been tracked in from outside.
  4. Practically all injuries from slips and falls on snow and ice fall under the classification of “traumatic injuries.” These injuries range from minor bruises, cuts, and abrasions to serious bone fractures, spinal cord damage and concussions. Strains, sprains, and tears comprise the largest category. The lower extremities are most often injured by these accidents, followed by multiple body part injuries, which are incidents with more than one traumatic injury to two or more unrelated parts of the body.
  5. Icicles and chunks of ice and snow can be deadly falling objects and projectiles! Most ice falls within five to ten feet of a building but can travel 50-100 feet from taller structures, such as cell towers, overpasses, or high-rise buildings.
  6. When icicles and chunks of ice fall, they fall quickly! A half-pound icicle, three inches in diameter, can fall at a rate of 80-90 mph! It can hit you with 1,000 pounds of deadly force!
  7. Black ice is one of the most feared hazards of winter. It is virtually impossible to see to those walking or driving on it. The accident rate on black ice can be up to five times higher than on dry surfaces and four times higher than on wet surfaces. Stopping distances for vehicles on ice is almost 10 times that of stopping distances for vehicles on a dry surface.
  8. The average winter slip-and-fall claim can average up to $40,000- $45,000 or higher! The costs mount quickly and can’t be ignored.

October Jobs Report

October Jobs Report: 43,000 More Jobs Than Expected

The numbers are in, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a strong gain of 128,000 jobs, which is 43,000 more jobs than economists predicted. Moreover, the unemployment rate ticked up a tenth of a percent from a 50-year low to 3.6 percent. This small increase in unemployment is due to an even more substantial rise in the U.S. labor force (those Americans who are working and actively seeking employment). Overall, this month’s Jobs Report demonstrates that the economy is healthy and should ease fears of a looming recession.

Let’s take a more in-depth look at the October Jobs Report

October was officially the 109th month in a row of job gains despite a couple of factors. The six-week GM strike reduced employment by 42,000 jobs, according to the BLS. However, the strike is finally over, so we are likely to see a nice bump in November’s report as the striking workers head back to work. Additionally, the number of workers helping prepare for the 2020 census dropped by a whopping 20,000. Thus, if you take both of these numbers into consideration, the number of jobs added theoretically could be 62,000 higher.

Another factor that should boost all our confidence in the economy is the revised job gains over the previous two months. In August, job gains were revised up by 51,000 (219,000 jobs in total), and in September, job gains were revised up by 44,000 (a total of 180,000 jobs). With these revisions, job gains over the last two months equate to 95,000 more jobs than previously reported. After revisions, job gains have averaged an impressive 176,000 over the previous three months. And over the year, job gains have averaged 167,000.

Average earnings for all employees continued to rise with an increase of $0.06, for an average hourly wage of $28.18. Over the last 12 months, hourly wages have increased by 3 percent. The labor force participation rate was also little changed at 63.3 percent. These are both great signs that the labor market remains strong as we get closer to 2020.

Job gains by industry

The food services and drinking places industry added a staggering 48,000 jobs. Over the last three months, this industry has averaged 38,000 job gains.

The professional and business services group ticked up again in October (+22,000). The industry as a whole has averaged 33,000 gains over the year.

In October, employment in social assistance increased by 20,000 jobs and a total of 139,000 over the past year. Family services made up most of these gains, with 17,000 jobs added.

Financial activities rose by 16,000, with the majority of gains from real estate, rental, and leasing (+10,000). Financial activities have added a total of 108,000 jobs over the last 12 months.

Healthcare once again added jobs (+15,000) with total job gains of 402,000 over the last year.

Job declines by industry

Not surprisingly, manufacturing employment fell by 36,000 jobs in October, due to the 6-week strike from GM workers in the motor vehicles and parts realm (-42,000 jobs).

Moreover, employment in the federal government fell by 17,000 jobs in October due to the departure of 20,000 workers finishing up their work prepping for the 2020 Census.

Employment in other major industries–including mining, construction, wholesale trade, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, and information—showed little change over the month.
