Standing out among other candidates can be as simple as emphasizing three things. By doing so, you can show your interest in the company and your appreciation for their time. It is a way to commit to the interview process and put your best foot forward.
Research the Company.
Do your research! There is no need to know specific numbers and percentages about the company, but it is helpful to know what the company’s basic function is, as well as its mission and values. Not only does this show that you are interested in the company, but it gives you a general idea of why the company runs the way they do and what its values are to see if YOU want to work for THEM!
Ask Questions.
Have a few questions ready to ask during the interview. Having no questions to ask at the end of the interview can be perceived as a lack of interest in the position. Don’t ask boring surface questions; interviewers will be able to see right through them. Ask questions whose answers will help you decide whether you want to accept the position. These could be about company culture, compensation, responsibilities, etc. Not only will you have an inside look into the company, but this shows that you are thinking critically about the role. You are evaluating them, and this shows them that you could be an asset to the company.
Follow up.
Show you care. If you are interested in the position, send a thank you email, and let them know that you are looking forward to hearing from them. If you have yet to hear from them at the beginning of the time frame they suggested, you can send a follow-up email asking for an update and if they need anything else from you. It is important to read the situation and see if a follow-up email is warranted. While it is good to stay in touch, you do not want to hound them. Keep it friendly, not stalker-y.

So if you haven’t caught on, we love March and the Madness that comes along with it. While we are going mad over all the college basketball, we also have a blast going mad over career success.
Trust me when I say that JSG is basically a success-atologist. We’ve seen how successful our candidates are in their positions, and we also see how placing certain candidates with a certain company ends up paying huge dividends for both parties.
Needless to say, we know a thing or two about success. So since it’s March and we’re feeling excited about the big tourney, we put together the ultimate guide for achieving that sweet, elite success in your career.
Four Ps of success
To start out, you can learn a few things about success from sushi. Yes, you read that right. Much like the teams in the big dance, there’s one sushi artist who has mastered his craft. He’s had ups and downs, and somehow he’s managed to build a legacy that cannot be matched. If you want to be like the tourney teams, check out these four Ps that will lead you to success.
Making a change in your life
Basketball is all about adjustments. You have to adjust your game in order to beat each opponent on a given night. If you feel like there’s something holding you back in your life or in your career, then you may want to make a change. And sometimes, that change is exactly what you need in order to take your prosperity to the next level. The best part is that it only requires three steps! Make these changes, and success will be knocking on your doorstep.
The motivation you need
We’ve all been there before: so close to victory but needing that extra push to achieve success. This happens all of the time in basketball, and teams get through it in the exact same way. The next time you’re feeling close to victory, or even if you’re just starting out on a new journey, check out these motivational quotes. Chances are, you’ll be inspired to get over the hump and become more successful.
Organizing your career
Last, you can’t be successful if you don’t know where everything is. Just like a team can’t succeed with their players scattered, you can’t be successful without some organization. We put together the ultimate guide for organizing your career. Once you become more organized in your career, success is much easier to accomplish. To put it in basketball terms; career organization will be a slam-dunk for your career!
It’s the second full week of March, which means it’s finally time to get MAD! Even if you’re not a college basketball fan, the effects of March Madness can be felt everywhere. For three weekends in a row, everyone shuts down. Vacation days are taken, and an unhealthy amount of basketball is watched through the first Monday in April.
Here at JSG, we’re here to tell you that the madness doesn’t need to be limited to basketball. Why not take that same passion and excitement we feel while watching basketball and apply it to our success? So without further adieu, I present to you Job Search Madness – your guide to a successful job search this month.

I recently watched one of the most inspirational and tasty-looking movies ever. It’s a film about one of the most successful restaurants in the world. Sushi master Jiro Ono’s dedication and love for his work are displayed in David Gelb’s Jiro Dreams of Sushi.
In the film, the viewer learns everything from Ono’s childhood to his nonexistent family life. One of the biggest takeaways is his success. He does many things that contribute to his success, and many of them align with some of the most successful people in the world.
We can all learn a thing or two (or four) about success from Jiro and others. So here are the four Ps of success, accompanied by a way you can get closer to achieving them in your career.
Pay Attention to Detail
This can be so hard to do sometimes, especially when the time is of the essence. However, the more attention you give to your detail the better your outcome will be. Whether it’s preparing for a meeting or writing an email, details show someone that you care and will definitely make you look better.
Details are what made Jiro’s sushi restaurant so successful. How long to massage an octopus before cooking it or how long the rice is steamed – down to the second – are things that have put Jiro on the map. The more details you incorporate and perfect will help you gain more success in your career.
What can you do to achieve this? Edit and prepare for everything! Phone calls with clients will be more efficient if you map out the purpose of the call and write down the talking points you want to get across. Ask a coworker to preview any emails or official documents you have written. The more you put into something the more you’ll get out of it.
Put in the Time
There are so many distractions in today’s world. Smartphones, instant-stream content, and personal social media platforms tend to draw us away from our work. In order to be successful, one must know when to work and when to play. Spend time at work and just go for it. Put in the hours now and your success will come later.
At age 85, Jiro was still putting in well over 12 hours a day at his restaurant. He put more time into his career than anything else, even his kids. When you’re around something constantly, you begin to pick it up. Jiro was able to learn by doing at work, and he has reaped the benefits ever since.
You can achieve this by putting in the time both at work and at home. And when you’re at work, be present. No one can learn something as soon as it is presented to them. Everything takes time and success is no exception. Patience is a virtue. The more patience you have and the more time you put into your work will only lead to good things for you in your career.
Perfect your Craft
In order to be the best, you must always strive for perfection. Even if you think there’s nothing else you can do better, there definitely is. There is always room for improvement – whether it’s your time management or your everyday work, there is always something to do better.
Jiro does just that every day. He is constantly perfecting his craft, and never thinks he has fully mastered the art of sushi. He is always looking for ways to maximize his time and resources. Whether it’s creating new sushi plates or preparing certain fish a differently, Jiro is always making sure he’s improving his 3 Michelin star restaurant.
At work it is so easy to get caught up in the same routine, thinking we’re doing everything possible. I do it all the time. It’s important to think about what else you can do. The reality of the situation is that there is always room for improvement, we just need to do it. Next time you’re at work, go above and beyond to perfect all aspects of your craft.
Project your passion
If you want to be successful, you must be doing something you really like. Sure, you might be making a lot of money, but are you really projecting your passion into your work every day?
The movie that captures everything about Jiro shows his passion. In fact, it just about smacks you in the face. Jiro is so passionate about his work that it keeps him going into his eighties. You see it in the ingredients he purchases and the products he creates for his customers. There is nothing Jiro would rather do than making sushi, and it has made him extremely successful.
Even if you’re not in your “dream job,” I’m sure there are things in your daily routine that you love. Project your passion into those, and eventually, you’ll project passion into everything. Not only will passion help you be more successful, but it’ll also help you enjoy waking up for work every day.
The four Ps to success
These four Ps may be a little tough to fully implement, but once you do, the rewards never end. Your successes will be more frequent and work will become more enjoyable. It’s a win-win!
