What Are Job Seekers Looking for in 2021 & Beyond?

Labor Day and the unofficial end of summer are (shockingly) just around the corner. As the last quarter of the year creeps upon us, many Americans are turning their attention beyond last-minute summer activities. According to the Pulse of the American Worker Survey: Special Report, 26% of all workers plan to look for a new job opportunity this year. This is encouraging for many employers looking to add new talent to their teams before the end of the year; however, to attract these job seekers during the Great Resignation, you must understand what they are looking for in a new role.

Remote work is no longer a benefit

The pandemic has made it clear that the majority of workers value remote work in some capacity. In fact, 87% of workers would like to work from home at least one day a week after the pandemic wanes. In other words, remote work is no longer a benefit, it’s a necessity for many workers. If your company is not supporting this demand, your candidate pool may fizzle out quickly.

Working from home still gets a bad rap by many employers. Some hiring managers believe that their workers are not as productive working from home or that it’s hard to collaborate. And this is likely true in some circumstances, but most employers ironed out these concerns over the last 18+ months. But with 1 in 3 workers not wanting to work for an employer that requires them to be onsite full-time, it may be time to rethink your post-pandemic workplace.

Why do workers want remote work?

Therefore, it’s clear that workers value remote work and will be looking for new opportunities that offer more flexibility. So, as an employer, it’s imperative to understand why workers care so much about it. According to the same survey, workers desire remote work for numerous reasons, including saving money, saving time (by not commuting), more time with family, better sleep, and improved health and stress levels. These are all great reasons why your team should be supporting remote work in some capacity.

Job seekers want a caring culture

Another aspect job seekers in today’s market are concerned with is healthy company culture. This desire is nothing new to employers, and many companies have been working diligently to foster a more inclusive culture in recent years. However, cultivating a caring culture can be a little more challenging with a hybrid workforce. Currently, 45% of workers still feel disconnected from their employer while working from home. According to respondents of this survey, culture in a remote environment can be improved by:

  • Companies offering remote-work resources
  • Updating company policies to reflect current times
  • More communication from the leadership team

These are three essential changes your team can make to develop a better company culture, even as some teammates continue to work remotely.

How to Fill Your Critical Roles by the End of the Year

Can you believe it’s already December? 2019 flew by quickly – especially if you’re a hiring manager in this competitive job market. It can be challenging to find the talent you need during this time of year with all of the holidays and time off. However, that doesn’t mean your team should push your hiring efforts to January. Here are three tips to fill your critical roles by the end of the year.

Move quickly

With only a few weeks left in 2019, you cannot have a slow hiring process. With an unemployment rate of 3.6 percent, job seekers have lots of options to choose from. If a resume comes across your desk that looks like a good fit, act with haste! If they seem qualified, give them a call, and schedule an interview. Try to schedule it before the holidays, so you have the opportunity to get that offer letter out before everyone is out of office. If your hiring process isn’t efficient, you will miss out on the best candidates on the market to your competition.

Offer competitive compensation

In this tight market, you have to come in with a firm offer. Many job seekers are entertaining multiple job offers, and thus, will likely accept the most competitive offer. Now is not the time to low ball your candidates. If you like what you see, present an offer that is worthy of their talent and experience.

Moreover, have you thought about the cost of a vacant position (or even multiple) on your team? You might be surprised the amount vacancies can cost your bottom line. In fact, it may also be cheaper in the long run to pay a talented candidate a competitive wage than absorb the lost in production and manpower.

Work with a recruiter

If you really want to streamline your hiring process, why not try and work with a recruiter? We understand you’re busy – especially at this time of the year. Why This is the Best Time to Find a New Job

What’s the best time of year to look for a new job? It’s kind of a loaded question, isn’t it? Various factors play into a successful job search – your industry, location, your experiences… The list goes on. However, this time of year is a fantastic time to look for a new opportunity! Yes, you heard that right. It may seem like a challenging time to nail down a new job opportunity at the end of the year, but this is a great time to explore new job prospects. Here are three reasons why this is the best time to find a new job.

It’s easier to schedule interviews

At this time of year, you’re probably taking some time off for the holidays. So, instead of awkwardly lying to your boss and calling in sick or making up a fake appointment to attend an interview, why not schedule one on your vacation? Most face-to-face interviews are only about an hour-long, and thus, doesn’t take a huge dent out of your holiday. However, if you take a half-day to sneak out of work for an interview, it will more than likely derail your productivity for an entire day.

Hiring managers are budgeting for the new year

Right now, hiring managers are finalizing their budgets for the new year. They are planning how to allocate their budget and how their team is going to grow. This is an excellent time for you to advance your career and get that much-needed raise. As a candidate, it’s a little easier to ask for the money you need to make a move as hiring managers are creating their budgets. If you try to get a job earlier in the year, their budget is likely set in stone, and it may be more challenging to get the money you are after. In other words, employers maybe a little bit more flexible with your salary requirements this time of year!

Time is on your side

Time is always of the essence in the hiring process. When interviewing for new opportunities, employers can’t afford to take their time making hiring decisions at this time of the year. With several holidays and lots of hiring managers/HR taking vacation time, employers have to move quickly to get candidates hired before the end of the year. If you’re looking for a new job and don’t want to be dragged around while employers make hiring decisions, this is a great time to kick off your job search!
