1. Do not ghost candidates

Alright, hiring managers, we know this is a tough one. Especially in today’s market, you’re receiving an influx of qualified candidate resumes. So many, in fact, that it’s nearly impossible to keep up with! But hear us out; today’s candidates are desperate for open communication. They will respect you and your brand all that much more if they receive a simple automated rejection email. And as we’ve learned through economic times, both prosperous and dire, reputation is everything!

2. Streamline our hiring process

Many of you are probably still hiring remotely, making this resolution challenging. However, as your competitors start to regain speed throughout 2021, you will get left in the dust with a slow and antiquated hiring process. Instead, take this time to focus on improving your strategy – getting people face-to-face (or on video chat) immediately, reducing the number of required interviews, and sending a solid offer as soon as possible.

3. Write better job descriptions

Believe it or not, one thing that will help you attract better candidates (and reducing the number of resumes you have to sift through) is writing a stellar job description. Not too long, not too short, enticing enough to grab people’s interest, but simple enough to retain it. Does your current job description paint a vivid picture of your company culture? Do you share your company’s stance on hot button issues like diversity, equality, and benefits? Today’s candidates want to know all of this information upfront before they invest time in submitting an application.

4. Retain the great employees we already have

Yes, we know these are “hiring resolutions,” but if you do a great job retaining the talent you already have, it will make hiring new talent that much easier. Especially while working remotely, be sure to check in with your employees often. Ask them how they are coping – both professionally and personally. The first few months of the year can be tough on people, particularly cooped up in their own house juggling home and work life.

5. Ask for help when we need it

However, the chances are that four weeks in, your excitement may be waning.

What was at first invigorating now feels like a chore — feelings of dedication turn to dread. Moreover, you still have 11 months to go in 2019! Revisiting motivational strategies to achieve your goals

In November, we published an article titled “The Only Thing Standing in the Way of Your Goals is You.” This sentiment remains more accurate than ever, especially concerning New Year’s Resolutions. When trying to make any significant lifestyle changes, starting is often the hardest but most crucial step. We want to change and improve, but change is hard. We procrastinate and make excuses like, “I didn’t have enough time to make healthy food today,” or “finding a new job is overwhelming, so maybe I’ll stick around for another year.”

These excuses and delays are what often derails any goals or resolutions we establish to better ourselves. And the fallout from failing to reach them can demean one’s self-esteem even further.

Take back control of your goals

To shake yourself from this mindset and break free from the rut of procrastination, you need to take back control. One simple way to do this is to make your bed each morning. Accomplishing your first task early in your day makes all proceeding tasks easier to manage and conquer. Just ask Navy Adm. William H. McCraven, the man behind this philosophy who says, “Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. And if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made — that you made. And a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.”

Another strategy removes the cushion that is time. Time, when making decisions, can be a killer in the sense that when we have a lot of it, we take too long to make these decisions. Failure to act can trap us in our current situations until we eventually accept the way things are. If you exercise the 5-Second Rule, you can remove this time spent pandering and jump right into action.

When faced with a task, begin counting down from five. It sounds ridiculous, but by attaching a tangible timeline to our decision-making process (even if it is only 5 seconds), we force ourselves into a productive, decision-making role, as opposed to a passive state. After being used regularly, you’ll find yourself making decisions without having to countdown from five, and you’ll come home to a nicely made bed.

To-do lists can be your best friend when you’re trying to accomplish work-related goals. You can make them to where they take you step-by-step through your goals and how you want to achieve them. Career goals normally have steps that are perfect for to-do lists and if you follow them, you’re sure to accomplish what you set out to. But it’s all about the follow through and consistency!

Have Quarterly/Monthly Goals

When you cut your year into smaller achievable goals it helps you break things up. This makes your aspirations not seem too out of reach and keeps you on track to reach them. It also gets you excited about taking the steps you need to take to reach your career’s new year resolutions. Overall, splitting up your goals into sections will only make you more successful in achieving them.

Celebrate Your Wins

Make sure to celebrate your wins! Just because they are small doesn’t mean they do not deserve to be celebrated. The small successes are what get you through the hard times and help you achieve the great ones! And they are not something to sniff at. So do that happy dance and make sure to give yourself the appreciation you deserve when you accomplish steps toward your true career goals.

Think of the Reward

Reminding yourself why you are working so hard will keep you on track. There is no doubt that 2019 will bring you struggles, not only in work but also in your home life… But if you remember what you’re working towards and why you want that reward, nothing will stop you from getting there.

We normally give up on New Year’s resolutions due to talking our goals and dreams down because it’s easier to not try as hard. It’s easy to say, “Oh, I’ll do it next year.” Or, “I only really wanted to do this for myself, I don’t need to do it.” This thought process is only selling yourself short. And when it comes to the job market today, working your butt off will only get you amazing opportunities! So don’t give up, and do everything you can to remind yourself that you can accomplish whatever you want, as long as you hold yourself accountable and follow the process.
