    • The default and traditional option to like a post.
  • Celebrate
    • Congratulate a co-worker, colleague, or a professional milestone, such as getting a new job or welcoming a new team member.
  • Love
    • Expresses that the post is heartwarming, resonates with you, or makes you feel an overall sense of appreciation or happiness. Good examples of this are thanking a past mentor or saying goodbye to a co-working leaving the company.
  • Insightful
    • Expressing that a post was insightful, made your think, offered a new idea, or shared a great point.
  • Curious
    • Expresses that you’re intrigued by a thought-provoking question or idea; expresses that you’re curious and want to learn more.

Now, these new reactions might seem fun or cute, but we must remember, LinkedIn is a professional networking tool. Many of us use LinkedIn to source new candidates and find new clients to engage with. Last week was the first day of Spring. The sun is finally shining, and we are finally seeing some better weather. This is the time of year when most Americans take some time to deep-clean the house, car, or yard to get ready for summer. However, have you ever thought about sprucing up that resume of yours?

If you don’t update your resume regularly, it can be difficult to try and remember all of the great things you accomplished three, six, or even 12 months ago. So while you’re in the cleaning spirit, here’s how to give your resume a good spring cleaning!

Remove that resume objective

Honestly, resume objectives are a waste of space and can distract hiring managers or HR from the rest of your resume. “I am a hard-working individual seeking a long-term career in the Healthcare industry with opportunities for career growth.”

This example, and like the majority of other resume objectives, says nothing about you as a professional. I am sure you are a hard worker looking for a new job. But so is everyone else. Instead of an objective, illustrate your passion and skills throughout your resume with concrete examples and figures.

Review your work history

You should take a close look at your work history every time you update your resume. There is a debate over how much work experience you should include. Some people think you should only limit your work experience to the past 10 or 15 years. However, if you’re well into your career, you may be doing yourself an injustice by cutting work history just to save space.

A good rule of thumb is if it’s relevant to the job you’re applying for, keep it on there. Now, you should go through each part of your career and tweak, add, or remove duties and achievements when necessary. But don’t just remove valuable work history because of an unwritten rule.

Eliminate some of your personal information

We’re almost a quarter of the way through 2019. In this day and age, we can leave out some of our personal information on our resumes. You no longer need to include your address on your resume. After all, you’re not mailing your resume in to submit for a job. All you truly need is your first and last name, your email address, and your phone number.

Besides, if you include your address on your resume, you may be filtering yourself out of consideration without even knowing it. If you apply for a position out of state or in a different city, you may not ever hear back if they assume you require relocation and the employer isn’t offering one.

Also never include your references on your resume. The last thing you want to do is include a reference without their knowledge. And if one of your references is from your current employer, the last thing you want is for the word to get out that you’re passively looking for a new job. Besides, an employer won’t even check them until further along in the hiring process.

Refresh your LinkedIn profile

Your LinkedIn profile is essentially your online resume. Your resume has your work experience, accomplishments, certifications, and a little bio about you. More and more people are beginning to include their links to their LinkedIn profiles on their resume. And recruiters, human resources professionals, and the like use LinkedIn to find candidates for their open positions.

Use your profile as an opportunity to share a little bit more about you professionally, personally, and show a little bit of your personality. Step 1 – Have the Marketing team make you a picture or find one yourself

As a member of the Marketing team, I know how busy you are. We are here to help you! If you have a job you’d like to post with an image, we can make you one in 5 minutes flat. This will include branding, a logo, your job title, location, and of course a corresponding picture.

This is probably the easiest way to get a graphic because all you have to do is send us the information and we will get it to you as soon as we can. You can also find pictures on your own. Just make sure you use one of the following sites:

These three sites contain royalty-free images that are free for anyone to publish. If you just find an image on  Google or another site, you put yourself and the company in possible legal trouble because we don’t have permission or the rights from the owners to use their images. So, if you decide to use your own photos, please only take them from these above sites.

Step 2 – Upload Photo on LinkedIn Post

Once you are on LinkedIn, press the photo icon on your publishing content tool. This will bring up your files and you can choose your picture from it’s saved location. Make sure you upload the picture first. If you don’t, it may affect the rest of the process.

Step 3 – Write in Your Job Description

The next thing you want to do is write in a short and catchy job description. Add in some requirements, location, and maybe some fun facts about the position. Don’t copy and paste the job description! This is your opportunity to show your personality and SELL the job, so use it to your advantage!

Step 4 – Add Website Link and Contact Information

After you have finalized your awesome and enticing job description, make sure to add some sort of contact information. Whether that is your phone number, email, or both, adding your contact details will help people reach out to you and ask questions or find out more about the position.

You also want to go to the JSG job board and find the hyperlink to your job post. Adding this link into your LinkedIn post allows potential candidates to directly apply to your job and all of their details and resume will get uploaded straight into Bullhorn.

Step 5 – Publish

And the last thing you need to do is publish your LinkedIn post! This allows candidates to get excited, see an engaging image, and hopefully, help you receive more qualified candidates.

It finally happened – a recruiter found you and reached out to you. They sent you an InMail on LinkedIn, emailed you, or called you directly. They have a position that seems like a perfect fit with a company that’s even better. Now what? Here are the first things you must do once a recruiter contacts you.

Take a moment to reflect

Before you even think about responding, take a moment to reflect on where you currently are in your career. You may be perfectly content with where you are now, but how will that change in the next six months? Year? Two Years?

Do you see yourself growing into your current position and within the organization? No matter how satisfied you are with your current position, it’s worth hearing out the recruiter. With today’s candidate-driven market, this may just be the best move for your career! Candidates have lots of options and accepting a new opportunity may be the best way to grow your career and lock down that pay raise you’ve been working hard for!

Do some research

Was it a third-party recruiter or an internal recruiter that contacted you? If it was an internal recruiter, it’s time to do some research!

Head over to their website to learn more about the organization. Check out their mission and vision statements. Visit their ‘About Us’ page and try to feel out the company. While you’re there, go to their open jobs and see if you can find the job description to learn a little more about the position.

You can also check out their social media pages to see what’s happening with the organization. Look out for new product launches, events, awards they received, etc. When doing your research, try to envision if this is a company you can see yourself working for.

If a third-party recruiter reached out to you, you may not know the actual company’s name yet. Instead, find the recruiter on LinkedIn and get a feel for them. Read their summary to learn a little more about them. Check to see if they have any recommendations from other clients or past candidates. Be sure to do a little research on the recruiting company they work for to ensure everything checks out.

Update your resume

This is probably self-explanatory, but the recruiter is going to want an updated copy of your resume. They may have found an old resume online or just found your experience on LinkedIn, but you want to be sure they have a fresh copy of your resume with your most recent experiences and accomplishments.

Even if your resume is up to date, this is a perfect opportunity to look at it with a pair of fresh eyes. Besides, once you know what the job is, you can tailor your resume to match the position and really demonstrate that you’re a great fit for the role.
