STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) positions are in high demand, and the room for innovation is endless. Women in particular, are pursuing this field at a rapid rate. In fact, according to a survey by MetLife, of women who’ve been pushed out of the workforce due to COVID-19 and are planning to return, 8 in 10 say they specifically want to move into a STEM job. If you have ever thought about transitioning your career, now is a great time to do so. Here are four things you can do to transition to a STEM career, starting today.

Do Your Research

Many people are surprised at the wide variety of specializations and jobs within the STEM field. From Zoologist to Computer Network Architects, there is a job for almost anyone in STEM! Do your research to find which specialization and position would best fit your career goals and existing experiences.

Be Willing To Start Over

As with any career transition, you must be willing to start over as you pursue a job in STEM. However, STEM employees are in high demand, and many employers are offering competitive salaries and aggressive career advancement to attract candidates. Be prepared to head back to school, pursue certifications, and take an entry-level job. Then, you can work up the career ranks as you excel!

Learn How To Transition Your Skills

If you have an established career in a different field, undoubtedly, you’ve acquired a wide variety of skills. Some of these skills will transfer easier than you think! Possessing creativity, analytical abilities, flexibility, and curiosity will go far in your pursuit of a STEM position. Think of these and other tools you have in your toolbox that could transfer over. Then, in your resume and cover letter, write a compelling story of how these skills transcend jobs and industries to contribute to overall success.

Complete Industry-Recognized Certifications

We mentioned it above, but industry-recognized certifications are an integral part of the STEM world. Additionally, it’s easier than ever to gain access to these certifications and quickly become an expert on any particular topic. Explore sites like Coursera or LinkedIn Learning to discover courses relevant to your field of study.
